Bio
I am a full-time artist based in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland. I began exhibiting while studying Fine Art at Belfast Metropolitan College in 2013, and since then my work has been shown in group exhibitions in Ireland, the UK, Italy and online. My first solo exhibition was held at Solas Art Gallery in 2025, and I am currently preparing for further solo exhibitions in 2026, 2027 and 2030.
I hold a BSc (Hons) in Geography and an MA in Documentary Film Practice from Ulster University. My work across visual art, film and writing reflects a long-standing interest in landscape, memory and lived experience. Alongside my visual art practice I am an award-winning screenwriter, with two dramas broadcast on Channel 4. I have also published two poetry collections in Ireland and a novel in the United States, and my short stories have appeared in literary journals in Ireland, the UK and the USA.
Artist’s Statement
My work explores the relationship between landscape, memory and lived experience. Working between abstraction and landscape, I am interested in how terrain can function not only as a physical environment but also as a repository of emotional and psychological experience.
My approach to landscape has been shaped by my early work in a government land survey department, where I was involved in the practical processes of measuring and mapping terrain and by the knowledge gained through my Geography studies. These experiences fostered a lasting awareness of landscape as a structured system of form, depth and spatial relationships, and continues to inform how I perceive and interpret the environments I inhabit.
Walking and direct engagement with landscape are central to my practice. Time spent moving through forests, hills, mountains, coastal areas and urban environments provides the sensory and spatial impressions that underpin many of the paintings. Rather than depicting specific locations, these works translate remembered sensations of place into gestural marks, layered colour and shifting spatial tensions.
Alongside these landscape-based paintings, I also create more freely abstract works in paint and pastel drawing. These pieces explore the physical behaviour of materials, movement, and the expressive possibilities of colour and gesture. Through pouring, staining, layering and mark-making, the work allows forms to emerge intuitively, often suggesting energetic fields, organic structures or imagined terrains.
Across these different approaches, the work investigates how experience is registered visually: how landscapes are internalised, how memories of place persist, and how colour, movement and material can evoke the complex ways we inhabit the world.
